Scam targeting Telecom customers

We are aware of a scam targeting our customers.

People impersonating Telecom staff are calling random mobile phone numbers, and if they get a Telecom post-paid customer, they advise them that a $50 account credit has been won.

The impersonator asks for customers' personal details, such as their full name, address, date of birth and confirmation they have a post-paid mobile account.

Once these details have been obtained, the impersonator then contacts our Telecom Call Centre posing as the Telecom customer and asks for additional mobile numbers to be connected. Their intention is to then begin using these mobile phones and charging up large bills onto our Telecom customer's account.

The impersonator is calling from overseas and we are aware of a number of accents being used including English and American.

We would like to remind our customers that they should not provide this level of detail to someone who calls them. When a Telecom representative calls you, you will not be asked to confirm if you have a post-paid customer account as we already know this, and we won't ask you to confirm your other personal details as we have these on our system.

If you think you have been contacted by one of these scammers, please contact us on 123 if you are a residential customer or 126 if you are a business customer.
