Basic Rate ISDN

  • Basic Rate ISDN is ideal for small sites that require high speed data transmission and want to integrate their voice, fax and data traffic over one access line.
  • Telecom Basic Rate ISDN is particularly suited to regional offices, small businesses and individual users within corporations.
  • It provides two 64 kbit/s channels into your premises over your existing telephone line.
  • These are channels that are used to transmit your voice, image, video or data calls.

ISDN Basic Rate Access

  • Basic Rate Access (BRA) provides two 64kbit/s communications channels or B channels. There is also a 16kbit/s D channel for call setup, signalling and D channel packet access. Up to eight separately addressed ISDN devices can be connected through a single BRA giving access to the two 64kbit/s B channels.
  • Particularly suited to regional offices, small businesses and individual users within corporations. Over one standard telephone line, you get two 64kbps channels into your premises which can handle voice, image, video or data calls.
  • Up to eight directory numbers on one Basic Rate connection.
  • You can connect up to eight devices (such as faxes, printers, telephones, and computers) to your single Basic Rate connection.
  • One directory number comes as standard with Basic Rate ISDN. You may have up to eight numbers using the Multiple Subscriber Number Service.
  • This means callers can dial up eight different devices via the two 64kbps channels. Two independent calls can be made at any one time. Calls can be received from the public telephone network as well as from ISDN subscribers.

ISDN is ideal for high bandwidth applications and high speed calls where the average daily traffic on each channel is less than 1 hour. If requirements are higher, consider a higher bandwidth service.

Ways to use Telecom ISDN B.R.A.

Direct Dial to ISDN BRA

  • means callers can dial directly through to company extensions without having to go through an Operator
  • increases the capacity for transfer of electronic information by removing one layer of human intervention
  • makes better use of existing ISDN Lines, achieving more capacity and flexibility

ISDN NT Plus

Enables the direct connection of existing terminal equipment such as fax machines or telephones to an ISDN BRA line.

LAN interconnect (WAN)

Joins local area networks on a dial-up basis. A single remote user can access services like printers and files on the main office's LAN. They can then function just as if they were in the main office. There is scope for the connection of teleworkers and remote offices.

File transfer

You can send and receive computer files to and from remote sites on a dial-up basis. Large files such as colour graphics and architects' plans can be sent quickly.

Interactive editing

One or more users can dial up a remote personal computer to view a screen image and make changes. It is useful in educational interactive multi-media. Visual communication can be further enhanced by desktop videoconference units.

Security monitoring

Cameras and alarms can be remote controlled via ISDN connections. The operator can view and control the image on a monitor.

Leased circuit dial back-up and overflow

Dedicated data circuits can be backed-up with dial-up ISDN circuits. If a leased circuit fails, special equipment can divert vital traffic through the ISDN network. (Note that the ISDN circuit may access the Telecom network via the same route as the leased circuit).

TECHNICAL OVERVIEW OF BASIC RATE ISDN

Over one normal telephone line, Basic Rate ISDN provides two 64 kbit/s channels into your premises, which can be used to transmit voice, image, video or data calls.

A signalling channel, called the "D" channel, controls the set up and operation of the two faster communication, or "B" channels, enabling two simultaneous independent calls over the two "B" channels. With additional equipment, these two channels can be combined for higher transmission speeds.

You can connect up to eight pieces of equipment such as faxes, printers, telephones or computers on your single Basic Rate connection (this will require some additional S-Bus cabling). One directory number comes as standard with Basic Rate ISDN, and a total of eight directory numbers may be assigned using the Multiple Subscriber Number service.

This means callers can dial up eight different devices via the two 64 kbit/s channels. Calls can be made and received from the public telephone network as well as ISDN subscribers.

In most cases your existing telephone line can be converted to ISDN. Telecom connects the necessary equipment at our exchange and a Network Terminator (NT) at your premises. This includes an RJ45 telephone socket so you can connect your ISDN compatible equipment.

For equipment that is not ISDN compatible, you will need a terminal adapter (TA) to convert the ISDN signal for recognition by your equipment.

Consider Basic Rate ISDN if you need:

  • Connection of a small/medium size digital PABX to the telephone network
  • to integrate low volumes of voice, data or video communications over a single access line
  • to transmit high resolution graphics or large files at high speeds to one or various destinations on an intermittent basis
  • to replace your modem solution with a faster, more reliable service
  • remote dial-up access to your LAN
  • leased circuit backup, or bandwidth on demand for overload
  • high speed Intermittent Internet access.
