Interview tips
Interviews at Telecom are a two-way conversation and we want you to be successful, so interview preparation is key. Finding out as much as you can about the role you are interviewing for and also about us will be key to your success. It's also an opportunity to decide if the job is really for you so think of a few questions you would like to ask us.
Interviews come in many shapes and forms and there may be a number of them including meeting with the Hiring Manager, your future peers or team or with specialists in your field. There will however always be a competency based interview in the selection process.
What is a competency based interview you ask?
A competency based interview involves us asking specific questions about your past behaviour or experiences, to give us an idea about the way you might handle similar situations in the future.
A sample question might be "tell me about an important decision you have made and the process you went through to make it". Your response to this will generally indicate how you will handle important decisions on the job.
When you answer competency based interview questions, try to answer them in three dimensions:
- Provide context - briefly outline the specific situation you were in
- Tell us what you did - this is the most important part of your answer!
- Describe the outcome and impact of your actions - briefly describe how the outcome or resolution evolved
The best way to prepare for this type of interviewing is to practice and have some good examples up your sleeve. You'll need to think about the specific competencies required for the role you are applying for and examples of you putting them into practice in your prior experience.
There's lots of information and tips on the internet around interviews from preparation to post interview follow up so tap into these resources to make sure you're well prepared.
