Interview tips

Telecom generally encourages a behavioural approach to interviewing. This involves asking specific questions about your past behaviour or experiences, to give us an idea about the way you might handle similar situations in the future.

A sample question might be "tell me about an important decision you have made". Your response to this will generally indicate how you will handle important decisions on the job.

When you answer behaviour-based interview questions, try to answer them in three dimensions:

  • Provide context - briefly outline the specific situation you were in
  • Tell us what you did - this is the most important part of your answer!
  • Describe the outcome and impact of your actions - briefly describe how the outcome or resolution evolved

The best way to prepare for this type of interviewing is to practice. Think about some specific situations you have been in that show characteristics such as:

  • Drive (being ambitious, resilient, challenging yourself)
  • Learning agility (being curious, critical, open-minded)
  • Interpersonal effectiveness (in communications, relationships, teams)
  • Self-awareness and management (knowing your strengths and weaknesses, being open to feedback and development)
  • Flexibility (being adaptable and open to new ideas and experiences)
  • Leadership (motivated to lead, self-starter, optimistic)

You'll also need to think about the specific competencies required for the role you are applying for and examples of you putting them into practice in your prior experience.

Contact centre interviews

If you are applying for a contact centre position, we aim to make the process an easy one by completing our assessment in one day and reaching a decision quickly. At your interview, we will first ask you to complete some skills testing.

If the testing is successful, you are given the opportunity to listen to calls in a contact centre (so you get a feel for the environment and the position) before meeting with a contact centre team leader.

Make sure you give yourself enough time to complete these activities (you will need 3-4 hours). If you need to schedule the team leader meeting for another time, we can work with you on this.
