Ultra Fibre is best for delivering a huge jump in capacity and speed for internet users.
Ultra VDSL is best for - If you can't get Ultra Fibre at your address and want an improved internet experience over your existing copper line.
Both Ultra Fibre and Ultra VDSL can provide greatly improved online experience as compared to ADSL broadband.
|Ultra Broadband||Upstream speed||Downstream speed|
|Ultra Fibre||Up to 50Mbps||Up to 100Mbps|
|Ultra VDSL||Between 5Mbps - 10Mbps||Between 15Mbps - 70Mbps|
To get connected with Ultra Fibre or Ultra VDSL a technician will need to visit your house.
Once fibre is in your street, you will need a new connection that runs to your home. You'll also need some new equipment both inside and outside of your house. The standard fibre installation should suit most New Zealand homes and will need two or more Local Fibre Company staff or contractors to do the work. It should take about a day to complete the installation. Watch this video to find out more about the Fibre installation.
To get your place connected to Ultra VDSL you will need some new technology on your existing copper broadband line, but the work won't take long. A Chorus technician will visit your home and install a new jack point (or modify an existing one) which your new VDSL modem will connect to. Standard installations will need just one Chorus technician and the work should only take 1-2 hours.
Ultra Fibre and Ultra VDSL are both designed to improve your internet connection. But the speed and consistency will vary, depending on which one you choose.
Fibre offers even greater speed, capacity and consistency and is not affected by the same constraints as ADSL or Ultra VDSL.
Lower latency - because fibre uses laser light to carry signals, it delivers a connection with much lower latency. This particularly important for things like online gaming, as you're likely to see far fewer delays.
Better for multi user households – Fibre offers even more bandwidth which means you are likely to experience less congestion and better consistency of speed at home when everyone is online at the same time.
Ultra VDSL speeds can vary depending on the property's location, the condition of its copper wiring and how busy the local copper network is at a given time. That said, VDSL can provide a faster connection speed and greater capacity than ADSL broadband.
Ultra VDSL technology is also smart, and can dynamically fine tune the speed and stability of the broadband connection. This is called Dynamic Line Management and is not available on ADSL broadband.
Speed: Stated speeds are based on theoretical maximums, and actual speeds will be affected by various factors including NZ and overseas networks, your modem and computer technology including wifi capability, internal home wiring and other environmental factors. Find out more.
