XT Mobile coverage in New Zealand

XT delivers world class 3G mobile coverage to New Zealanders.

New Zealand has one of the most beautiful environments in the world, and we're as proud of it as you are.

But our unique geography does create some challenges for mobile signal reception, so we've taken the terrain and the locations of our cell towers into account and created maps of how far we expect our XT Mobile Network to reach.

All this information is just a visual guide of the expected 3G mobile voice and data coverage areas for Smartphone Network. We can't guarantee actual coverage at any one place as there are many things that can affect a mobile signal and the services of our network, including the local geography and surroundings, building types, and demand on our network from other people.

How to read the maps

Good coverage

This is where our coverage should be at its strongest. You should be able to use your mobile anywhere, even indoors or in built-up areas.

Fair coverage

For the most reliable service in these areas you might be better to use your mobile outdoors.

Limited coverage

You should still be able to get some signal in these areas. If you can't, try taking your mobile outdoors, or try to attach an extension aerial.

Safety first

As kiwis, we love getting out and about so please remember to be safe.

If you're heading into the bush or high country, then we recommend you don't rely on your mobile phone, but take alternatives like mountain radios or a satellite phone, just in case.
If you're going out on the water, there are even more factors that can affect your mobile signal, so please be safe and follow the Maritime New Zealand standards by carrying marine VHF as your primary means of communication.

Go twice as fast

By the end of 2012, we'll have installed new dual carrier capability on 30% of our network, and by early 2013, approximately 50% of our towers will be dual carrier enabled. Dual carrier sites have double the capacity and provide at least twice the download speed on compatible devices. You can expect to receive an average of 13Mbp/s average downlink, which means much faster downloading and streaming.

Current dual cell capable devices include the Nokia Lumia 920, iPhone 5, iPad 3 and iPad Mini, with more to come next year.

We've also started work to build a brand new, super-fast 4G nationwide network over the next 3-5 years. Called LTE (long term evolution), the first network trials kick off in February 2013.
