Mobile insurance

Telecom customers on a monthly plan can get some extra peace of mind by taking up insurance for their mobile handset.

How do I get mobile insurance?

You can add mobile insurance when you buy a postpaid phone or an iPhone on a monthly plan.

What does mobile insurance cover?

Telecom mobile insurance covers your device, the battery, the charger and your SIM card but it does not include any phone accessories.

While insured your mobile is covered for:

  • Accidental damage (including repairs or replacement, depending on severity)
  • Accidental Loss (Worldwide)
  • Loss (Worldwide)
  • Theft (Worldwide)
  • Extended Warranty (Worldwide)
  • Up to $1000 of unauthorised voice or data calls made in New Zealand after your device has been lost or stolen
  • Cost of hiring a temporary mobile device if your mobile device is lost or stolen while you’re overseas up to the value of $500. (You must keep all receipts if you wish to claim on this benefit).

For more specific details on policy cover and full terms and conditions read Telecom's mobile insurance policy.

The price of Mobile Insurance is...

For devices with a recommended retail price (RRP) of $799 or less, the monthly premium is $9.95 (based on the open term RRP).

For devices with a RRP of $800 or more the monthly premium is $13.95 (based on the open term RRP).

An excess of $100 per claim applies for devices priced at $799 or less. For devices of $800 RRP or more the excess is $150. The above prices all include GST.

What else you should know...

You need to opt for mobile insurance at the time of purchasing your phone so that you have immediate cover – you cannot sign up for insurance afterwards. Mobile insurance is only available for Telecom approved XT Network devices.

Your mobile insurance policy also provides cover for your SIM if it is lost, accidentally damaged or stolen with your insured XT mobile device anywhere in the world (during the period of insurance).

If you recover the mobile device before or after any claim payment, you must inform us and return it to us. We may recover all claim payments made and all our associated costs if you fail to do so.

If you change your mobile device, it is your responsibility to contact us and reapply for cover for the new device. Failure to notify us of the change may result in a claim on the device being declined.

Using your SIM in connection with an uninsured XT device does not transfer the insurance cover to that mobile device.

If you change your mind within the first 30 days then you can contact us and we will refund your premium and cancel your policy.
