Important things to know

  • The terms and conditions that apply to Wireless landlines are:
  • Wireless landlines are only available in certain 4G coverage areas. 4G coverage isn't available everywhere.
  • You may only use your Spark wireless modem to receive the service at the installed location. If you use it at another location we may suspend, disconnect or restrict your Basic Wireless Broadband service without notice. If you move house, let us know beforehand so we can check the options available at your new house and get you set up for your move.
  • Wireless landlines use a Spark wireless modem which requires mains power. This means the landline or devices such as cordless phones and other devices (like medical alarms) may not be able to work if there's a power outage - even if they have a battery. This could impact your ability to contact 111 emergency services. We recommend you have an alternative method, such as a charged mobile phone or a power backup device such as an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to keep you connected.
  • Vulnerable Consumers: If you’re a Spark account holder and either you or someone in your household needs to contact 111 emergency services on your landline for medical, disability or security reasons, Spark will provide eligible customers a suitable device to contact 111 in the event of a power cut. To apply you’ll need to download and complete a Vulnerable Consumer form, after you have submitted your order. For more information visit spark.co.nz/vulnerable
  • Under the Commerce Commission’s 111 Contact Code, it’s our responsibility to provide extra support to people who qualify for it, for health, disability or safety reasons. Whatever the situation, we’ll never refuse to provide you with a landline just because you need this extra support.
  • If you have a monitored alarm that uses your landline, you’ll need to update it to a wireless option. Most medical alarm providers offer wireless monitoring solutions. It's important that you arrange this with your provider.
  • Wireless landlines don't use a copper connection or phone jackpoints in your home. Your existing home phone calling will work as normal when plugged into the back of the modem. If it's a cordless (DECT) phone, you’ll still need to have the base station connected to power. If you have multiple phones in other rooms that are connected via the jackpoint in the wall, these will not work. If you want to use multiple phones, we recommend using a cordless (DECT) phone with multiple handsets.
  • The following services don't work with Wireless landlines:
    • You can't use a SKY remote to download SKY "pay per view" movies or games, or SKY betting. You can still order SKY "pay per view" movies or games by calling SKY TV.
    • Home 0800
    • Hotline
    • Talk it up neighbouring area
    • Eftpos machines that require a landline
    • Faxes
  • The terms and conditions that apply to Fibre landlines are:
  • Fibre landlines will not work during a power cut. This means the landline and devices such as medical alarms or cordless phones won't work in the event of a power cut. This could impact your ability to contact 111 emergency services. We recommend you have an alternative method, such as a charged mobile phone or a power backup device like an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to keep you connected.
  • If you’re a Spark account holder and either you or someone in your household needs to contact 111 services on your landline for medical, disability or security reasons, Spark will provide eligible customers a suitable device to contact 111 in the event of a power cut. To apply you’ll need to download and complete a Vulnerable Consumer form after you have submitted your order. Learn more about Vulnerable Consumers
  • Spark’s Fibre Landline service does not use a copper connection or phone jack points in your home. You can use portable cordless phones (which are available from Spark) if you need multiple phones in your home.
  • The following services don't work with Fibre Landline:
    • Monitored alarms, including medical and security alarms, that require a Copper landline
    • You can't use a SKY remote to download SKY "pay per view" movies or games, or SKY betting. You can still order SKY "pay per view" movies or games by calling SKY TV.
    • Home 0800

Fibre Installation

  • Installing Fibre to your house involves physically connecting a fibre optic cable to your property from the roadside. There are a few ways that Fibre can be laid to your house (such as surface mounting, digging a trench, underground cabling or through your aerial cables), and the Local Fibre Company (LFC) technician will choose the best option for your property.
  • If you are not the owner of the property or share access to the property (for instance, a right of way, apartment or flats) you will need written consent from the owner and/or neighbours before installation begins. Your LFC can help with the consenting process.
  • We will submit your desired appointment date and time to the LFC who will perform the installation. If this date/time is not possible we will let you know and request a new appointment. The installer usually arrives between 8am and 12pm if you select a morning preference or between 12pm and 5pm if you select an afternoon preference and you will need to be home on the day you choose.
  • What to expect on the day:
    • An installer will arrive at your home and talk you through what work's required to get your fibre connection up and running, including any work that needs to be done to your property.
    • The technician will complete external and internal wiring, and physical setup, then test the connection to make sure you’re good to go.
    • You’ll need to agree to your Local Fibre Company's End user terms first. Find your local fibre company on the UFB website. Go to the UFB site

Standard Fibre installation

  • The standard Fibre installation should suit most New Zealand homes and requires a technician from your LFC to carry out work at your house. They will make sure you understand what's required and won't start any work unless you're happy with what's proposed.
  • Sign up to any Spark Fibre plan and the standard install is free.
  • The Local Fibre Company staff will let you know if your place needs a non-standard installation. Additional charges will apply. See below for more information.
  • If you need your Fibre landline service to be connected to the existing wiring and jackpoints in your house, you'll need to let us know when you order the service. This will allow you to continue to use any devices that are connected to the home jackpoints such as extra phones, monitored alarms, faxes, and set top boxes. There is no cost to do this wiring work.

Non-standard installation

  • You'll need this if your house is more than 200m from the Fibre access point on the street (such as down a right-of-way), if you live in an apartment or block of flats, or if any additional wiring is required as a result of a non-standard request inside the house.
  • The Local Fibre Company staff will let you know if your place needs a non-standard installation and what that's likely to cost before they start any work.
  • The terms and conditions that apply to Copper landlines are:
  • Copper landlines are not available everywhere.
  • Whilst you will ordinarily be able to dial 111, we can't guarantee that voice lines dedicated to 111 calls will always be fault-free.
  • Some devices such as medical alarms or cordless phones that do not have an in-built battery backup won't work in the event of a power outage. If that happens, you won't be able to call 111 emergency services, so it’s important to have a mobile phone handy for emergencies or a landline device that does not rely on a power supply to operate (such as a corded phone).
